When someone you love dies far from home, bringing their cremated ashes back to family can be emotionally overwhelming and logistically complicated. Whether your loved one's ashes are in another country and need to be brought home to the United States, or are in America and need to be returned overseas, Eternal Legacy Service can help.
We offer personalized international ash repatriation services, including overseas retrieval, personal escort, documentation coordination, customs preparation, and direct delivery.
From another country to the United States. From the United States to another country. Wherever home may be.
Perhaps a parent passed away while living abroad. A family member died during international travel. Or a loved one's ashes have remained with a funeral home or relative overseas, waiting to be brought home.
You may not be able to travel internationally to retrieve them yourself. You may be unsure about the country's paperwork, airline restrictions, or how to arrange a safe return.
Eternal Legacy can help bring your loved one's cremated ashes home to the United States.
Depending on the location and circumstances, we can arrange to personally travel to the country where the ashes are being held, coordinate their authorized release, escort them on the return journey, and deliver them to the family or designated recipient in the United States.
We can assist with:
You don't have to navigate an unfamiliar country's requirements alone.
Tell us where your loved one's ashes are located and where you would like them brought home. We'll help you explore the options.

Sometimes a loved one dies in America, but their final wish is to return to the country where they were born, raised, or where their family still lives.
Eternal Legacy also assists families with transporting cremated ashes from the United States to international destinations.
We coordinate documentation requirements with the receiving country, review airline and customs procedures, and help arrange an appropriate transfer to the family, funeral home, cemetery, or other authorized recipient overseas.
Some countries require consular authorization, certified documents, translations, or confirmation from a receiving funeral provider. In certain destinations, regulations also control how ashes may be stored, buried, or scattered after arrival.
We examine these requirements before travel arrangements are finalized.
Whether your loved one is returning to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, or another destination, we can review the circumstances and determine whether a personal escort or another permitted transportation arrangement is appropriate.

Business Spotlight interviewed Eternal Legacy founder Stan Reese about international ash repatriation, including the documentation, airline requirements, customs procedures and logistical challenges families may encounter when transporting cremated ashes across borders.
When personal escort is selected and available, your loved one's ashes travel in the care of a dedicated courier rather than being handed from one shipping carrier to another. We plan the route, review airline requirements, and use an appropriate carry-on container whenever permitted.
We identify the paperwork required for the particular journey, which may include certificates of death and cremation, certified translations, apostilles, consular permits, export authorizations, or receiving-facility documentation. Requirements vary by country and circumstances.
We coordinate an authorized release from the family, funeral home, crematory, or other approved custodian. Pickup, custody transfers, and final delivery are documented as appropriate for the arrangement.
For personally escorted journeys, we can provide location-sharing and journey updates when available, using tools such as Apple AirTags and Google location sharing. We keep families informed of important travel milestones.
We arrange delivery to the authorized family member, funeral provider, cemetery, or other designated recipient. Where appropriate, we document the recipient, delivery location, and completion of the handoff.
We understand that cremated ashes are irreplaceable. Every arrangement begins with a conversation about your loved one, your family's wishes, and the safest practical way to complete the journey.

There is no single worldwide set of rules governing the transportation of cremated ashes.
For journeys into the United States, fully cremated ashes generally do not require a CDC import permit. However, the country where the journey begins, connecting countries, and the airline may require supporting documentation or specific transportation procedures.
For journeys out of the United States, the receiving country's requirements can be considerably different. Some destinations require consular approval, additional certifications, or delivery through an authorized funeral provider.
Airport screening is also important. An urn intended for carry-on travel must be suitable for security screening. Materials such as wood or plastic are generally more suitable than dense metal or stone. TSA officers in the United States will not open a cremation container to inspect its contents, and an urn that cannot be cleared through screening may be refused.
Eternal Legacy reviews the requirements applicable to each journey before confirming an arrangement.
International repatriation costs depend on where the ashes are located, their destination, airfare, ground transportation, documentation, local coordination, and the urgency of the request.
We evaluate the available options and explain the costs before you commit. Our goal is to provide a dignified and practical solution without unnecessary expense.

Yes. We can evaluate overseas retrieval arrangements, including personal travel to collect ashes from an authorized custodian, international transportation, and delivery in the United States. Availability depends on the country, documentation, release authorization, travel conditions, and other requirements.
Tell us where the death occurred, whether cremation has been completed, and who currently holds the ashes. We can help identify the appropriate next steps and which local authorities, funeral providers, or consular offices may need to be involved.
Fully cremated ashes generally do not require a CDC import permit. However, documentation may still be required by the country of departure, airlines, transit countries, or other authorities. We review the requirements of each journey individually.
It depends on the countries involved and the purpose of travel. Some authorities require original or certified documents, translations, apostilles, or consular authorizations. We identify the specific requirements before the journey.
Most often, yes. Airline and airport security requirements vary. For travel through U.S. checkpoints, the container must pass security screening, and TSA officers will not open an urn to inspect it. We recommend confirming the rules and using a suitable travel container before departure.
Sometimes. From the United States, USPS permits certain international shipments of cremated ashes through Priority Mail Express International, using required packaging, when the destination country accepts them. Rules for mailing ashes into the United States from another country depend on the originating postal service and applicable import and transit requirements. We review mailing only when it is a lawful and suitable option.
Depending on local requirements and the service arrangement, we can coordinate delivery to an authorized family member, funeral provider, cemetery, or other approved recipient.
Yes. Eternal Legacy provides destination ash-scattering memorial services. If your family wishes, we can discuss whether a separate memorial service may be arranged at an appropriate, legally permitted location after repatriation.
Costs depend on the route, documentation, local assistance, transportation method, and timing. We provide a customized written estimate after reviewing your circumstances.
